Dear Rhiannon

I have been gone for four days, and I miss you. But I have been away for noble reasons, working very hard with Auntie Julie (and Pobba was here for the weekend, too). We’ve been canvassing in Colorado. We have knocked on hundreds of strangers’ doors, made dozens of phone calls, and worked into the dark hours doing meticulous data entry. Auntie Julie and I hunted down votes, following up on Obama supporters, getting them to the polls. I am here, away from you, because I felt I had to do something to make sure that this election went blue. I did this for many reasons, one of which was for your future… because I am your mom. This is a big moment. History will someday be able to measure the gaping legacy of the Bush-Cheney regime. We have been without hope for so long…

But then, at 8pm tonight, with the closing of the California and Washington polls, the world changed. Congratulatory calls flew… An hour later when President-Elect Obama gave his speech of unity, I couldn’t help but think: Rhiannon’s next eight years will be lit with hope, instead of hopelessness and stupidity. And that your world will be positive as you develop a sense of self is the greatest thing a parent can hope for a child.

I love you higher than the sky and deeper than the ocean. I will be home tomorrow.

Love, Mommy

Well right on Emily!!!!! I have 5 grandchildren and love them as you do Rhiannon. I pray for our new president and our marvelous country and fragile planet.

I’m so proud of you. What you did was noble indeed. It’s easy to make excuses when you have young children, easy to put off your best intentions until they’re older.

And your work was not for naught. Hoo HA!

(I responded to some of your wonderful comments, over at my blog.)

Thank you, Kitty… Thank you Tricia la dish… It felt good to go and work for this. May all our children and grandchildren have nothing but better days ahead.

I am so proud to be your mother! You rock big time.
